Doing dirty work for the tree trust

Staff from a Gisborne law firm got their hands dirty on Friday... weeding, mulching and planting native trees on Kaiti Hill.

Woodward Chrisp Lawyers teamed up with volunteers from the Women's Native Tree Project Trust (WNTPT) to muck in near the top of Kaiti Hill, in a belated effort for conservation week.

About 30 native plants, including manuka, tarata, mahoe and whau were planted in an effort to bring back insects and birds to the area, said spokeswoman for the WNTPT, Kauri Forno.

Woodward Chrisp, whose own Gisborne roots date back to 1926, had long been a supporter of charitable causes such as Loud Shirt Day - raising money for the Hearing House and the Souther Cochlear Implant Paediatric Programme, said Michelle England, practice manager.

But the team decided to make their charitable contributions closer to the community where the firm was based.

"We wanted to do something closer to home,so this project really appealed to us... we thought it was something we could do,"said partner Ross Revington.

The native trees were donated by WNTPT nursery and the mulch was gifted by Gisborne business Arborcare, said Ms Forno.
